What is BaZi?
BaZi (八字), literally "eight characters," is a Chinese system of divination
that encodes your birth year, month, day, and hour into four pillars of two Chinese characters
each — for eight characters total. Each character is a Heavenly Stem or Earthly Branch tied to
one of the Five Elements. Together they describe your personality, elemental balance, and life
cycles. It's also called the Four Pillars of Destiny.

What is the I Ching?
The I Ching (易經, also Yijing or Book of Changes) is a
Chinese divination classic dating to roughly 1000 BCE — older than the Bible, older than
democracy. You ask a question, generate a hexagram (a stack of six broken or solid lines), and
read its interpretation. There are 64 hexagrams in total, plus changing lines that produce a
second hexagram.

How is BaZi different from Western astrology?
Western astrology is Greek and Babylonian and uses planetary positions and zodiac signs. BaZi
is Chinese and uses the solar calendar, the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, and the Five
Elements. Daoly is built on three Chinese traditions — BaZi, I Ching, and Wu Xing — that don't
pretend to be one thing. They ask different questions in different ways, and we keep the seams
visible.

Do I have to believe in it for it to work?
No. A lot of people use Daoly the way they'd use a journaling prompt with better taste. The
real question is not "is this real" — it's "does looking at yourself through this lens make
you think more clearly." Sometimes the answer is yes.

What if I don't know my exact birth time?
You're fine. The hour pillar adds resolution to your BaZi chart, but missing
it is not a dealbreaker — it's like reading a book without the footnotes. Still a book.

Will you sell my data?
No. Your chart data stays on your device. Your partner's, parent's, or boss's birth info —
added during compatibility readings — also stays on your device. We can't see it. We're not
building a surveillance business with a 易經 skin on top.

Why only one I Ching reading per day in the free tier?
Because asking the same question fourteen times until you get the answer you want is not
divination, it's a breakdown. One real question, one real answer, sit with it.

Your Day Master (日主) is the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar in BaZi — one
of ten characters that describes the core "you." Daoly translates each one into a plain-English
archetype: the Pine Tree, the Sun, the Mountain, and so on.

Da Yun (大運) is your major luck cycle in BaZi — a 10-year period
whose elemental character shapes the texture of that decade. Everyone is inside one right now.
